Princess Anne Timeline
1950 (15th August)
Princess Anne was born Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise to Princess Elizabeth, daughter of King George VI and Philip Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace. She was the couple’s second child, her brother Charles had been born in 1948.
1950 (21st October)
Anne was christened in the Music Room of Buckingham Palace by Archbishop of York, Cyril Garbett.
1951 (during)
Princess Elizabeth frequently stood in for her father at public events due to his declining health.
1952 (31st January)
Anne and her brother Charles remained in England when their parents Elizabeth and Philip left Britain to begin a tour of East Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
1952 (6th February)
King George VI died from lung cancer. He was succeeded by Princess Elizabeth who became Queen Elizabeth II. Prince Charles became Duke of Cornwall and Rothesay and heir to the throne while Anne became second in line to the throne.

The funeral of Anne’s grandfather, King George VI was held at St George’s Chapel, Westminster Abbey.

A governess, Catherine Peebles, was appointed to oversea Charles and Anne’s education.

Anne’s mother was crowned Queen at Westminster Abbey by Dr Geoffrey Fisher Archbishop of Canterbury. Anne did not attend the ceremony but appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace afterwards. It was the first royal coronation to be televised.

Anne and her brother Charles remained in England when Queen Elizabeth and Philip left Britain to make a seven-month tour of the Commonwealth.

Princess Anne married Mark Phillips at Westminster Abbey. Phillips declined the offer of an earldom on his marriage. The couple made their home at Gatcombe Park.

Mark Phillips was appointed a personal aide-de-camp to Queen Elizabeth II. A position which gave him the title Captain.

Anne and Mark were returning from a charity event when a Ford Escort, driven by Ian Ball, forced them to stop on The Mall. Ball, who was armed, attempted to kidnap Anne and shot her chauffeur and personal police officer. A journalist was also shot as was a passing police constable. However, back up police had been called and Ian Ball thwarted in his attempt and was arrested. All those injured recovered.
1975 (August)
Anne came second in both the individual and team competitions at the European Eventing Championships, held at Luhmuhlen, Germany on her horse Doublet.
1976 (August)
Anne competed in the Three Day Event at the Montreal Olympic Games on the horse Goodwill.
1977 (17th May)
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip embarked on a three month tour of Britain to celebrate her Silver Jubilee.

Celebrations were held throughout the commonwealth to mark the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.

Celebrations were held throughout the Commonwealth to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee. Despite poor weather thousands turned out to witness the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant where 1,000 boats and barges sailed up the River in procession. A live concert was also held outside Buckingham Palace and Charles made a speech to his mother.

Queen Elizabeth became the longest reigning British monarch having surpassed the reign of Queen Victoria.
