Princess Anne Timeline

1950 (15th August)
Princess Anne was born Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise to Princess Elizabeth, daughter of King George VI and Philip Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace. She was the couple’s second child, her brother Charles had been born in 1948.
1950 (21st October)
Anne was christened in the Music Room of Buckingham Palace by Archbishop of York, Cyril Garbett.
1951 (during)
Princess Elizabeth frequently stood in for her father at public events due to his declining health.
1952 (31st January)
Anne and her brother Charles remained in England when their parents Elizabeth and Philip left Britain to begin a tour of East Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
1952 (6th February)
King George VI died from lung cancer. He was succeeded by Princess Elizabeth who became Queen Elizabeth II. Prince Charles became Duke of Cornwall and Rothesay and heir to the throne while Anne became second in line to the throne.
1952 (15th February)
The funeral of Anne’s grandfather, King George VI was held at St George’s Chapel, Westminster Abbey.
1953 (around)
A governess, Catherine Peebles, was appointed to oversea Charles and Anne’s education.
1953 (24th March)
Anne’s great-grandmother, Queen Mary, widow of King George V, died.
1953 (2nd June)
Anne’s mother was crowned Queen at Westminster Abbey by Dr Geoffrey Fisher Archbishop of Canterbury. Anne did not attend the ceremony but appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace afterwards. It was the first royal coronation to be televised.
1953 (24th November)
Anne and her brother Charles remained in England when Queen Elizabeth and Philip left Britain to make a seven-month tour of the Commonwealth.
1954 (15th May)
Elizabeth and Philip returned to Britain.
1957 (27th February)
Anne’s father, Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was granted the style HRH.
1959 (May)
Anne attended the 1st Buckingham Palace Guide Company. The Company had been established in 1937 for Anne’s mother. It was now re-established for Anne.
1960 (19th February)
Anne’s brother, Andrew Albert Christian Edward was born to Elizabeth and Prince Philip at Buckingham Palace, London.
1960 (6th May)
Anne’s aunt, Margaret, married Antony Armstrong-Jones at Westminster Abbey.
1963 (September)
Princess Anne was sent to Benenden School in Kent.

Anne met Mark Phillips at a party for horse enthusiasts.

Anne’s brother, Edward Antony Richard Louis was born to Elizabeth and Prince Philip at Buckingham Palace, London.

The princess became President of the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTAs). She held the position for 38 years.
1973 (29th May)
The engagement of Anne to Mark Phillips was announced.
1973 (14th November)
Princess Anne married Mark Phillips at Westminster Abbey. Phillips declined the offer of an earldom on his marriage. The couple made their home at Gatcombe Park.
1974 (during)
Mark Phillips was appointed a personal aide-de-camp to Queen Elizabeth II. A position which gave him the title Captain.
1974 (20th March)
Anne and Mark were returning from a charity event when a Ford Escort, driven by Ian Ball, forced them to stop on The Mall. Ball, who was armed, attempted to kidnap Anne and shot her chauffeur and personal police officer. A journalist was also shot as was a passing police constable. However, back up police had been called and Ian Ball thwarted in his attempt and was arrested. All those injured recovered.
1975 (August)
Anne came second in both the individual and team competitions at the European Eventing Championships, held at Luhmuhlen, Germany on her horse Doublet.
1976 (August)
Anne competed in the Three Day Event at the Montreal Olympic Games on the horse Goodwill.
1977 (17th May)
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip embarked on a three month tour of Britain to celebrate her Silver Jubilee.
1977 (7th June)
Celebrations were held throughout the commonwealth to mark the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.

A son, Peter Mark Andrew, was born to Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips at the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital, London.

Peter Phillips was christened in the Music Room of Buckingham Palace by Archbishop of Canterbury, Donald Coggan.

The Royal family was devastated when Lord Louis Mountbatten was assassinated by an IRA bomb off the Western coast of Ireland.

Queen Elizabeth made a speech calling 1992 her annus horribilis.

Prime Minister John Major announced in the House of Commons that Prince Charles and Princess Diana were to separate.
1996 (28th August)
The marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana was formally dissolved.
1997 (31st August)
Lady Diana Spencer was killed in a car crash in Paris.
2002 (9th February)
Anne’s aunt, Princess Margaret, died following a stroke.

A second daughter, Isla Elizabeth was born to Peter Phillips and his wife Autumn.
2012 (2nd – 5th June)
Celebrations were held throughout the Commonwealth to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee. Despite poor weather thousands turned out to witness the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant where 1,000 boats and barges sailed up the River in procession. A live concert was also held outside Buckingham Palace and Charles made a speech to his mother.
2014 (17th January)
A daughter, Mia Grace, was born to Zara and Mike Tindall.
2015 (9th September)
Queen Elizabeth became the longest reigning British monarch having surpassed the reign of Queen Victoria.
2018 (19th May)
Princess Anne attended the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at St George’s Chapel, Windsor.
2018 (18th June)
A daughter, Lena Elizabeth, was born to Zara and Mike Tindall.
2018 (12th October)
Anne attended the wedding of her niece, Princess Eugenie to Jack Brooksbank at St George’s Chapel Windsor.
2019 (7th March)
Anne attended an event at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Charles’s investiture as Prince of Wales.
2020 (11th February)
It was announced that Peter Phillips and his wife Autumn had separated.
2020 (15th August)
Princess Anne was given the rank of General in the army and Air Chief Marshall in the air force to mark her 70th birthday.
2021 (9th April)
Anne’s father, Prince Philip died at Windsor.
2021 (17th April)
Anne attended the funeral of her father, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh who was buried in St George’s Chapel, Windsor.
2022 (April)
Anne and her husband Tim Lawrence made a tour of Australia and Papua New Guinea to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
2022 (2nd June)
A four-day programme of events to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee began with the Trooping of the Colour. The Queen did not take part, but Anne was present and played a major role in the Trooping of the Colour.
2022 (8th September)
Anne’s mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died at Balmoral Castle, Scotland. Her brother Charles became King Charles III.
2022 (19th September)
Princess Anne attended the funeral services for Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey and Windsor Castle.
