Prince William Timeline

1982 (21st June)
Prince William, Prince of Wales was born William Arthur Philip Louis to Prince Charles and Diana at the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital, London. He was second in line to the throne.
1982 (4th August)
William was baptised in the Music Room at Buckingham Palace by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie.
1983 (March)
Prince Charles and Diana made a six week tour of Australia and New Zealand. They took the young prince William with them.
1984 (15th September)
William’s brother, Henry Charles Albert David, known as Harry, was born to Prince Charles and Lady Diana.
1985 (during)
Prince William attended Mrs Mynor’s Nursery school.
1987 (September)
William began his primary education at Wetherby Prep School, Kensington, London.
1990 (September)
William attended Ludgrove School, Berkshire.
1991 (1st March)
Prince William made his first public appearance on St David’s Day in Cardiff.
1991 (3rd June)
William needed surgery after being hit on the head by a golf club.
1991 (23rd October)
Prince Charles and Diana went on a 4 day visit to Ontario, Canada. They took William and his brother Harry with them.
1992 (29th March)
William’s maternal grandfather, Earl Spencer, died of a heart attack.
1992 (9th December)
It was announced in the House of Commons that William’s parents, Prince Charles and Lady Diana, were to separate.
1995 (Autumn)
William enrolled at Eton College.
1996 (28th August)
The marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana, was formally dissolved. Custody of their children was shared equally.
1997 (31st August)
William’s mother, Lady Diana Spencer, was killed in a car crash in Paris. William and his brother Harry were told the news at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
1997 (6th September)
Prince William and his brother Harry walked in procession behind their mother’s coffin with Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Earl Spencer. After a service at Westminster Abbey she was buried on an island at the Althorpe family estate.
1998 (during)
William and his brother Harry made a formal request to the media to allow them some privacy in their lives.
2000 (Summer)
William left Eton. He gained 12 GCSEs and 3 A-levels in Geography, Art History and Biology.

Prince William took a gap year from his studies which was spent doing community and conservation work in Chile, Kenya and New Zealand.
2001 (Autumn)
Prince William entered St Andrew’s University in Scotland to study Art History, he later changed to study Geography. He became friends with fellow student Kate Middleton.

William and Kate began a romantic relationship.
2005 (January)
Following the Boxing Day 2004 Tsunami, William and his brother Harry volunteered to help the British Red Cross organising supplies for countries affected.

William graduated from St Andrews University with a degree in Geography.

William made his first solo overseas tour when he went to New Zealand to represent the Queen in World War Two commemorations.

William became patron of the Centrepoint charity for the homeless.

William became a patron of the Tusk Trust, a wildlife conservation charity in Africa.

William entered the Sandhurst Military Academy.
2006 (May)
William became President of the England Football Association.
2006 (15th December)
William graduated from Sandhurst Military Academy. The Queen, Prince Charles and other members of the royal family attended his graduation.
2007 (February)
William became vice royal patron of the Welsh Rugby Union.
2007 (April)
William and Kate Middleton ended their relationship. However, they remained friends and were often in each other’s company.
2007 (May)
William became a patron of the Mountain Rescue England and Wales.
2007 (1st July)
Prince William and Harry organised the Concert for Diana, a benefit concert at Wembley Stadium with proceeds going to charity.

William accompanied the Duke of Kent to Hylands Park, Chelmsford to open the 21st World Scout Jamboree.

William completed his RAF training at Cranwell.

William undertook a period of training with the Royal Navy to give him experience of that service.

William made a tour of New Zealand on behalf of the Queen.

William completed his training as a pilot in the RAF Search and Rescue Force. He remained with the service and was based in Wales.

William made a 10 day trip to Kenya accompanied by Kate Middleton. During the holiday William proposed to Kate and she accepted.
2010 (November)
Kate Middleton’s parents visited William’s father, Prince Charles at his private residence at Balmoral.
2010 (16th November)
The engagement of William to Catherine (Kate) Middleton was announced.
2010 (December)
William and Kate attended a fundraising event for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
2011 (24th February)
Prince William and Kate Middleton attended a lifeboat naming ceremony in Angelesey, Wales.

William visited Christchurch, New Zealand after an earthquake had struck the city. He then visited areas of Australia that had been badly affected by flooding.

The marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton took place at Westminster Abbey. To mark his marriage, William was made Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus.

William was best man at the wedding of his brother Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. His children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte were page boy and bridesmaid.

Prince Louis Arthur Charles was christened at the Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.
2018 (12th October)
Prince William attended the wedding of his cousin Princess Eugenie to Jack Brooksbank at St George’s Chapel Windsor. His children Prince George and Princess Charlotte were page boy and bridesmaid.
2019 (December)
Prince William and Catherine announced the Earthshot Prize. A competition to find solutions to environmental problems.
2020 (March)
It was announced that Prince George and Princess Charlotte would be home-schooled during the coronavirus lockdown.
2020 (December)
William, Kate and the royal children attended a pantomime at the London Palladium, performed for keyworkers during the coronavirus pandemic.
2021 (February)
William attended a Coronavirus vaccination centre in Kings Lynn to encourage people to get vaccinated.
2021 (11th March)
The Prince told reporters that the royal family is ‘very much not a racist family’. The comment was in response to accusations made by Meghan Markle during an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
2021 (9th April)
William’s grandfather, Prince Philip died at Windsor.
2021 (17th April)
William attended the funeral of his grandfather, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh who was buried in St George’s Chapel, Windsor.
2021 (21st May)
Prince William made a statement criticising the BBC following publication of the Dyson Report which revealed that deceit had been used by Martin Bashir to obtain the famous interview with his mother Diana. He stated that the interview soured the relationship of his parents and increased Diana’s isolation and paranoia.
2022 (10th May)
Queen Elizabeth II was unable to attend the state opening of Parliament due to mobility issues. William attended as a support to his father, Charles, Prince of Wales, who delivered the Queen’s speech.
2022 (2nd June)
A four-day programme of events to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee began with the Trooping of the Colour. William was present at all events and appeared with his mother and close family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
2022 (8th September)
William became heir to the throne after his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, died at Balmoral Castle, Scotland. His father Charles became King Charles III.
2022 (9th September)
King Charles III made his first public broadcast. During his speech he confirmed that William would become Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall, Earl of Chester and Duke of Rothesay.
2022 (19th September)
William Prince of Wales attended the funeral services for Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey and Windsor Castle.
