House of the Dragon Timeline

This House of the Dragon Timeline covers the rise and fall of House Targaryen and their dragons.

Details are taken from George RR Martin’s ‘World of Ice and Fire’. All dates are relative to the conquest of Westeros by Aegon I – BC being before the conquest and AC after the conquest.

House of the Dragon Timeline – Early Rulers

around 100 BC
The Doom of Valyria, a simultaneous eruption of fourteen volcanoes, destroyed the city of Old Valyria and much of the surrounding area, the Valyrian Targaryen family took control of the island of Dragonstone to the east of Westeros. The Doom destroyed most of the Targaryen’s dragons. The few that remained were taken to Dragonstone.

Aegon Targaryen was born to Aerion Targaryen and Valaena Velaryen. He had an older sister Visenya and a younger sister Rhaenys was born sometime after.

Argilac Durrandon sought an alliance with Aegon Targaryen against Harren the Black of the Iron Islands. He offered Harrenhal and the surrounding lands in return for Aegon’s army and dragons. He also offered his daughter Argella as a wife for Aegon but he had already married his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys. Aegon suggested Argella marry his half-brother Orys Baratheon.

Aegon II invaded Westeros. He landed in the Blackwater and built a castle named Aegonfort. He and his sisters, Rhaenys and Visenya, rode the three remaining dragons Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes.

Aegon II defeated Harren the Black after the dragon Balerion bunt Harrenhal.

Aegon’s half brother, Orys Baratheon, invaded the Stormlands and took the land for himself, founding House Baratheon. He continued to support Aegon who called him ‘..my strong right hand’.

Aegon Targaryen won the War in the West after destroying House Gardener and receiving the submission of House Tyrell and House Lannister.

Torrhen Stark decided to submit rather than fight the Targaryens. The Starks were allowed to rule the North under the overlordship of the Targaryens.
Conquest
Ronnel Arryn surrendered in exchange for a ride on a dragon.
Conquest
The High Septon offered the support of the Faith of the Seven to Aegon Targaryen. Aegon now had control of all of Westeros apart from Dorne.

An attempt was made to conquer Dorne. But the Dornish practice of using guerrilla tactics rather than open fighting made them impossible to beat. Aegon agreed that Dorne should remain independant.

Aegon Targaryen was crowned by the High Septon in the Starry Sept at Oldtown. He was proclaimed Aegon of House Targaryen, the First of His Name, King of the Andals, the Rhoynoar and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm. In reality he was only Lord of Six Kingdoms because Dorne remained independant.

The site of Aegonfort became known as Kings Landing because that was where Aegon had landed. Targaryen began construction of King’s Landing at the mouth of the Blackwater River. He used 1,000 swords of those he had defeated to forge a throne which was named the Iron Throne of Westeros.

Aegon I started this war in an attempt to conquer Dorne.

On the suggestion of Queen Visenya the Kingsguard were formed to protect the King. The Kingsguard was made up of seven knights, to represent the Seven Kingdoms. They were forbidden from marrying and sworn to protect the King for the rest of their lives.

The First Dornish War ended in defeat for the Targaryens.

Fearful of attack, Aegon ordered the construction of city walls around Kings Landing.

King Aenys married Alyssa Velaryon. They had six children Rhaena, Aegon, Viserys, Jaehaerys, Alysanne and Vaella.

Kings Landing had continued to grow and was now the third largest city in Westeros.

King Aegon ordered that Aegonfort be replaced by a new grander castle which would be known as the Red Keep.

Aegon I died. He was succeeded by Aenys Targaryen, his 30 year old son by his sister Rhaenys. Aenys rode a dragon named Quicksilver.

The bandit Harren the Red rebelled against the rule of Aenys by seizing Harrenhal. After killing Lord Gargon, he disappeared.

Aenys’ half-brother Maegor was married to Lady Ceryse of Hightower. The Kingdom was shocked when Maegor now took a second wife Alys Harroway. To appease the High Septon Aenys exiled his half-brother.

The Vulture Hunt
A Dornish rebel, known as the Vulture King, rebelled against the Targaryens. The rebellion was quickly put down.

King Aenys shocked the Faith Militant when he announced that his son Aegon would marry his daughter Rhaena.

The Faith of the Seven strongly denounced the intermarriage and called Aenys an abomination for allowing it to go ahead. The people turned against the King and he and his family fled to Dragonstone for safety. There Aenys became ill.

Aenys Targaryen died. His younger, exiled brother Maegor took the throne over Aenys’s heir, Prince Aegon.

King Maegor led an attack against the Faith Militant, comprised of the Warrior’s Son and the Poor Fellows. Rather than fight he called for his loyal subjects to rally to him. Thousands heeded his call showing the Faith Militant they could not win.

Trial of the Seven
Maegor agreed to a trial by combat between Damon the Devout and six Warrior’s Sons against himself and six champions. Maegor was the last man standing.

King Maegor’s nephew, Aegon, the rightful heir to the Iron Throne led a rebellion against Maegor to take the throne. Aegon and his dragon Quicksilver were both killed.

Queen Visenya died. Aenys’ widow, Alyssa secretly left the Red Keep with her children. Her eldest son, Viserys was a squire of the King and had to be left behind.

When he discovered Alyssa and he children had fled, Maegor questioned and tortured Viserys until he died.

Construction of the Red Keep was completed. Maegor ordered a great feast for all those involved in the construction. At the end of the feast he slaughtered them all because he wanted the network of tunnels beneath the Keep to remain secret.

Maegor launched a new campaign against the Faith Militant and killed thousands of people. Gradually the people turned against him.

The Realm rose up against the rule of Maegor in support of Aenys’ remaining son, Jaehaerys. Maegor had no response and was found dead on the Iron Throne. His arms were slashed and he bled to death. It is likely he committed suicide, but many believed that the Iron Throne killed him.

Jaehaerys, the fourteen year old son of Aenys, was crowned King of the Seven Kingdoms. From the outset he was a good king and sought peace. He reached a truce with the Faith Militant whereby he agreed to stop the killing if they would disband and accept the Targaryen practice of incestuous marriages.

Jaehaerys married his sister, Alysanne. They had thirteen children.

A tournament was held at King’s Landing to celebrate Jaehaery’s 50th year on the throne.

Jaehaerys’s eldest living son and heir, Baelon the Brave, died.

Jaeherys Targaryen died. He was succeeded by his grandson, Viserys I, son of Baelon the Brave. Viserys was married to his cousin, Aemma Arryn and they had a daughter, Rhaenyra.

Kiing Viserys’s brother Daemon was a continual thorn in the side. The two quarrelled after Viserys refused to allow Daemon to set aside his wife who he detested.

In a bid to appease his brother, Viserys made him Commander of the City Watch.

Commander of the City Watch, Daemon Targaryen, announced that members of the City Watch would wear gold cloaks. He spent much time with the City Watch patrolling the streets of Kings Landing and became popular with the common people.

Queen Aemma died after giving birth to a son, Baelon. The child died the following day.

Ignoring the precedent of primogeniture, Viserys announced his daughter Rhaenyra as his heir.

Ser Criston Cole was appointed a Knight of the Kingsguard.

King Viserys married Lady Alicent Hightower. They had four children, Aegon, Helaena, Aemond and Daeron.

Prince Daemon, Viserys’ brother, joined forces with Corlys Velaryon whose son, Laenor also had a claim to the throne through his mother Rhaenys Targaryen, a granddaughter of King Aenys I. Corlys Velaryon, head of House Velaryon, was nicknamed the Sea Snake. Together they challenged the rule of Viserys.

A son, Aegon, was born to Viserys I and his second wife Alicent.

Viserys’ wife Alicent, and her father who was Hand of the King, began pushing for Viserys to declare his young son his heir. Viserys maintained that his daughter would succeed.

Prince Daemon and the Sea Snake had won many victories. Daemon gave himself the title King of the Narrow Sea.

A Tourney was held. Viserys’ wife chose to wear green while his daughter Rhaenyra chose black. Thereafter the supporters of each became known as the greens or the blacks. At the Tourney, Viserys’ brother Daemon returned and pledged allegiance to the King.

Prince Daemon was found in bed with Viserys’ daughter Rhaenyra. Daemon asked Viserys to annul his marriage and allow him to marry Rhaenyra. Viserys refused and exiled his brother.

Ser Criston Cole became leader of the Kingsguard. He and Rhaenyra were very close and some people thought they were lovers.

It was announced that Rhaenyra Targaryen was to marry Laenor, son of Corlys Velaryon and Rhaenys Targaryen. Soon afterwards there was a disagreement between Ser Criston Cole and Rhaenyra. Some people believed he had asked her to run away with him and she refused.

A son, Jacaerys was born to Rhaenyra and Laenor. They had two more sons, Lucerys and Joffrey. There grandfather Viserys gave each child a dragon egg on their birth. The eggs hatched into the dragons Vermax, Arrax and Tyraxes.

Viserys’ brother Daemon married Laena Velaryon, daughter of Corlys Velaryon after his wife Rhea had died. Daemon and Laena had twin daughters, Baela and Rhaena.

Daemon’s wife, Laena Velaryon, died shortly after giving birth to a deformed son that also died.

Rhaenyra’s husband, Laenor, was murdered. Shortly afterwards she married her uncle Daemon. They had a son nine months later who was named Aegon. To avoid confusion he was known as Aegon the Younger while Rhaenyra’s half-brother was known as Aegon the Elder. Rhaenyra and Daemon had a second son Viserys.

 

House of the Dragon Timeline – Dance of the Dragons

129 AC
Viserys I died. Before his death he maintained his wish that his daughter Rhaenyra succeed as Queen of Westeros.

Ser Criston Cole, Commander of the Kingsguard, named Aegon the Elder, Viserys’s son by his second wife, as the rightful heir.

Aegon the Elder was crowned King Aegon II. He was married to his sister Helaena and they had three children Jaehaerys, Jaehaera and Maelor.

Rhaenyra had been unable to travel to Kings Landing because she was about to give birth to another child. However, when she heard that Aegon had seized the throne she planned revenge.

Rhaenyra sent her son Lucerys to Storm’s End to gain the support of Lord Borros. However, when he arrived he found that Prince Aemond, brother of King Aegon II, had arrived before him. The two had no love for each other and fought. A storm blew up and, riding their dragons, they both crashed into the sea and Lucerys was killed.

Lucerys’ father, Daemon vowed revenge for the death of his son. He sent an assassin to murder one of Aegon II’s sons and Jaehaerys was killed. Soon afterwards Aegon ordered the Kingsguard to take his youngest son, Maelor, to safety. On the journey they were set upon by a mob and the child was killed.

Battle of the Gullet
This battle saw the fleet of Corlys Velaryon defeated. Jacaerys, Rhaenyra’s son by Laenor, and his dragon Vermax were killed. Aegon the Younger’s dragon Stormcloud was killed but he survived.

The sons of Rhaenyra, Aegon the Younger and Viserys, were sent to Essos for safety. On the journey their ship was captured. Aegon escaped by flying away on the dragon Stormcloud. The dragon had been injured and died soon after landing.

In addition to the notable battles listed below, the fighting continued on an almost daily basis and there was much bloodshed. The use of dragons in many battles had led to them being almost wiped out.

Ser Criston Cole was killed in this battle.

Aegon II riding the dragon Sunfyre, supported by his brother Aemond riding Vhagar, battled against Princess Rhaenys, wife of Corlys Velaryon, riding Meleys. The battle was fierce but Rhaenys was eventually defeated and killed. Aegon II was very badly injured and his dragon Sunfyre was crippled. Aemond and his dragon were unhurt.

King Aegon II spent the rest of the year recovering from his wounds at Dragonstone.

Battle Above the God’s Eye
Daemon and Aemond came into conflict in this battle. Both men, and their dragons, were killed. After the death of Daemon, Rhaenerys lost much of her support.

Rhaenerys knew she was beaten and fled, with her son Aegon the Younger, to Dragonstone. When she arrived she found King Aegon there recovering from his wounds. Aegon had no sympathy for his half-sister and fed her to his dragon Sunfyre. Aegon the Younger was imprisoned.

King Aegon II was assassinated with poison.

 

House of the Dragon Timeline – After the Dance

131 AC
Eleven year old Aegon the Younger succeeded as King Aegon III. Because he was a minor a Regency was formed to govern the Kingdom. At the time of his accession there were just four dragons remaining.

Aegon III was married to his cousin, 8 year old Jaehaera, daughter of King Aegon II.
133 AC
Queen Jaehaera died after falling from a tower window. Her death was recorded as suicide but many thought she had been murdered.

The King’s council was eager for Aegon III to marry and get an heir. A ball was held wo he could choose his bride. He chose to wed six year old Daenaera Velaryon.

Aegon III was delighted when his brother Viserys returned to Kings Landing. Viserys brought with him his wife, Larra Rogare and a dragon egg.

Viserys’ wife Larra gave birth to a son. The dragon egg Viserys had brought hatched but the dragon was deformed and harmed the child, Aegon. Aegon ordered all dragon eggs removed from the Red Keep. Viserys and Larra had two more children Aemon and Naerys.

Aegon III came of age. He attended the meeting of the Small Council and dismissed the regency.

Aegon III wife, Daenaera came of age. She gave birth to a son, Daeron. The couple had four more children, Baelor, Daena, Rhaena and Elaena.

Viserys’ eldest son, Aegon, was married to his sister Naerys. Their son, Daeron was born later that year.

King Aegon III died. He was succeeded by his son Daeron. Daeron was advised by his uncle Viserys who was Hand of the King.

Daeron I decided to conquer Dorne.

The early conquest of Dorne had gone well and twenty Lords had bent the knee to Daeron.

Daeron I returned to Kings Landing leaving Lyonel Tyrell to manage any pockets of resistance in Dorne.

Daeron was forced to return to Dorne after his steward, Lyonel Tyrell was killed. The killing of Tyrell had led to a revolt against the rule Daeron.

Daeron agreed to attend a meeting with the Dornishment to negotiate a peace. When he arrived he was attacked and killed. Hand of the King, Viserys ordered those responsible to be imprisoned in Kings Landing pending execution.

Daeron I was succeeded by his brother Baelor I. Baelor was a pious man. He had married his younger sister Daena the previous year but had refused to consummate the marriage.

Baelor had retained his uncle as Hand of the King.

Baelor decided to pardon the Dornish hostages and returned them to Dorne. He begged for the release of Aemon Targaryen and survived a pit of vipers to release him.

Baelor wanted to keep his sisters pure. He had his marriage to Daena annulled then placed his sisters in the Red Keep away from the world.

Hand of the King Viserys’s grandson Daeron was married to Myriah of Dorne as part of a settlement for the release of Aemon Targaryen. The had four children, Baelor, Aerys, Rhaegel and Maekar.

In the later years of his reign, Baelor had taken to fasting for long periods.

Baelor’s sister Daena gave birth to a bastard son, Daemon. Baelor fasted to atone for her sin. After fasting for 41 days he collapsed and died.

Baelor’s uncle, and Hand of the King, took the throne as King Viserys II.

Viserys became ill and died. He was succeeded by his eldest son Aegon IV.

Aegon IV was not a good King and preferred pleasing himself to ruling the Kingdom. He had many mistresses and fathered numerous bastards. He also treated his wife badly and continued to make her pregnant despite the knowledge it could kill her.

Aegon IV had many bastard children by nine different women. He acknowledged many of his sons giving them the surname Blackfyre. He disliked his eldest son Daeron,who was married to Myriah Martell and was peace-loving. Instead, Aegon IV gave preferment to Daemon Blackfyre.

Throughout his reign, Aegon IV was obsessed with trying to get dragons to return. He commanded men to use alchemy to build him dragons. Many died in the process.

Aegon IV died having achieved little. He was succeeded by his son, Daeron II.

Daeron II set about repairing the damage his father had done to the realm.

Daeron held talks with the Prince of Dorne, Maron Martell.

It was agreed that Dorne would unite with the Seven Kingdoms. The agreement would be sealed with the marriage of Prince Maron to Daeron’s sister, Daenerys.

First Blackfyre Rebellion
A rebellion broke out due to the preferrment Daeron showed to Dorne. A number of Daeron’s father’s bastards joined the rebellion including Daemon and his sons who were killed in the fighting. After putting the rebellion down, Daeron took land, property and hostages from those who had joined the rebellion.

After the rebellion had been put down, Daeron ruled in peace. His son and heir, Baelor served as Hand of the King.

King Daeron II decided he had too many grandsons that would potentially be rivals for the throne in the future. He sent his grandson, Aemon, son of Maekor, to the Citadel to train as a Maester.

Baelor was accidently killed by his brother Maekar during a trial of seven.

King Daeron was taken ill during the Great Spring Sickness. He was succeeded by his son Aerys I.

Aerys I was married to his cousin Aelinor Penrose but showed no interest in consummating the marriage.

King Aerys appointed his bastard uncle Brynden Rivers as Hand of the King.

Lord Dagon Greyjoy began raiding the North. At the same time Daemon Blackfyre attempted to overthrow King Aerys. The rebellion was put down fairly easily.

A third Blackfyre Rebellion began. It was soon put down. Haegon Blackfyre was killed and Aegor Rivers captured. Aerys decided not to excute him but sent him to join the Nightswatch.

King Aerys I died. He was succeeded by his younger brother Maekar I.

Maekar I was the fourth son of Daeron II. His wife, Dyanna Dayne had died around 2009. He had six children: Daeron, Aerion, Aemon, Daella, Aegon and Rhae. Aemon had been sent to the Citadel in 207 AC and Aerion had been banished in 209.

Maekar’s son Aemon, who had qualified as a Maester, was summoned to court and his son Aerion was allowed to return from exile.

Maekar’s son Daeron, heir to the throne, died after catching pox from a prostitute.

Maekar’s son Aerion died after drinking wildfire. He believed that drinking wildfire would turn him into a dragon.

Maekar died during the Peake Uprising. A meeting of the Great Council determined that Aegon, youngest son of Maekor should be King. Aegon had not been resident at court but had travelled around the Kingdoms with Ser Duncan the Tall disguised as his squire Egg.

Aegon V was married to Betha Blackwood and they had five children: Duncan, Jaehaerys, Shaera, Daeron and Rhaelle.

Aegon V appointed Duncan the Tall as Commander of the Kingsguard.

Aegon V was a benevolent ruler who tried to enact measures to make life easier for the smallfolk. However, in order to do so he had to raise taxes on the rich which turned many lords against him.

Aegon’s brother, Aemon, decided to take the Black and join the Night’s Watch. He was worried that he might be used as a pawn by those seeking to unthrone Aegon.

Aegon V faced a new rebellion by the grandson of Daemon Blackfyre, but it was easily supressed.

Aegon’s eldest son and heir, Prince Duncan abdicated his position after he fell in love with a common girl and refused to give her up.

Prince Jaehaerys, heir to the throne, secretly married his sister Shaera They married in secret because their father, King Aegon V, disapproved of incestuous marriages. Shaea had been betrothed to the heir of Highgarden, Luthor Tyrell.

A son, Aerys, was born to Jaehaerys and Shae Targaryen.

A daughter, Rhaella, was born to Jaehaerys and Shae Targaryen.

Prince Daeron broke his engagement to Lady Olenna Redwyne. He was determined not to marry and spent much of his time with the Knight Jeremy Norridge.

Prince Daeron died putting down a rebellion against the Crown.

Pycelle became Grand Maester to Aegon V. He had a fascination for wildfire.

Faced with continual rebellions, King Aegon V decided that he would not be secure unless he had a dragon. While trying to hatch dragon eggs at Summerhall, the building caught fire and King Aegon V, his son Duncan and his friend Duncan the Tall, as well as many other members of the court, died.

Aegon V was succeeded by his son Jaehaerys II.

A son, Rhaegar, was born to Aerys and Rhaella Targaryen.

Jaehaerys II was faced with a new rebellion by supporters of the Blackfyres. It was known as the War of the Ninepenny Kings because nine leaders of the rebellion sought to make their own lands in Westeros. The rebels had some initial success but when the leader of the rebellion, Maelys Blackfyre was killed by Ser Barristan Selmy they faced defeat. Selmy and Brynden Tully, known as Blackfish, were celebrated as heroes for helping Jaehaerys defeat the rebels. Barriston Selmy was appointed a member of the Kingsguard.

 

House of the Dragon Timeline – The Mad King Aerys II

Jaehaerys II died following a short illness. He was succeeded by his son, Aerys II.

King Aerys II was 18 years old when he succeeded to the throne. He was married to his sister Rhaella and they had a son, Rhaegar.

King Aerys II appointed Tywin Lannister Hand of the King after being impressed by how he ruthlessly put down a rebellion.

King Aerys II had great plans for the Seven Kingdoms but grew bored of each idea before it had even been properly planned.

Queen Rhaella suffered a miscarriage.

Queen Rhaella suffered a second miscarriage.

Queen Rhaella was delivered of a stillborn daughter, Shaena.

A son, Daeron, was born to King Aerys II and Rhaella. He died after six months.

Queen Rhaella was delivered of another stillborn child.

King Aerys II could not understand all the stillbirths and miscarriages. He began to convince himself that his wife was unfaithful to him since he could not believe that he would father dead children. He locked Rhaella in Maegor’s Holdfast and ordered two septa’s to be with her 24 hours a day so that she could not be unfaithful.

Queen Rhaella suffered a third miscarriage.

A son, Aegon, was born to King Aerys II and Queen Rhaella. He died the following year.

Around this time Aerys II began to mistrust Tywin Lannister. They disagreed on numerous things including the involvement of Westeros in a war between Volantis, Myr and Tyrosh.

King Aerys II began deliberately doing the opposite of what Tywin Lannister suggested believing his Hand of the King was working against him.

A son, Tyrion, was born to Tywin and Joanna Lannister. He suffered from dwarfism. His mother died from complications with the birth. King Aerys II told Tywin that the Gods were punishing him for working against his King.

A son, Jaehaerys was born to King Aerys II and Queen Rhaella. The birth of Jaehaerys brought an end to the Kings irrational behavious.

Prince Jaehaerys died after six months. The King initially blamed the child’s wet nurse and had her beheaded. He then believed his mistress had poisoned the child and had her and her family executed.

Aerys II then decided he had been wrong and in an atonement for the killing, spent a fortnight praying and fasting.

A son Viserys was born to King Aerys II and Queen Rhaella. Although delighted with the birth of a healthy son, Aerys was paranoid in case someone should try to kill the child.

Tywin Lannister organised a Tournament to honour the birth of Viserys. At the event Tywin Lannister suggested that his daughter Cersei marry Aerys’ son and heir, Rhaegar. Aerys still mistrusted Lannister and refused saying that a servant’s daughter was not a fit bride for a King. Tywin Lannister was furious.

Defiance of Duskendale
Lord Denys of Duskendale wanted a charter from the Crown to give him more power. After Tywin Lannister dismissed the idea, Denys invited the King to visit him and discuss the idea. After Tywin Lannister warned the King not to go, Aerys decided to accept the invitation. Aerys arrived at Duskendale with a small force and was immediately taken prisoner.

Defiance of Duskendale
King Aerys II had been a prisoner for six months when Ser Barristan Selmy managed to infiltrate Duskendale and release the King. Aerys II was so angry that he had Lord Denys beheaded on the spot. He then ordered all families that had sided with Lord Denys to be burned alive. Dontos Holland, a child, was spared after Barristan Selmy pleaded for his life.

After he returned to Kings Landing, Aerys II shut himself in the Red Keep and refused to leave. His six months incarceration had worsened King Aerys’ madness and paranoia.

King Aerys had summoned Steffon Baratheon to court and gave him the task of going to Volantis to find a worthy Valaryian bride for Prince Rhaegar. On his return journey, the ship sank and Lord Steffon and his wife Lady Cassana were drowned. King Aerys believed that Tywin Lannister had caused the ship to sink.

King Aerys ordered a eunuch called Varys brought to court. Varys was known for his network of spies and knowledge of what was going on. Aerys made him Master of Whisperers.

A son, Aegon, was born to Prince Rhaegar and Elia of Dorne.

Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark disappeared. Lyanna’s brother Brandon assumed Rhaegar had kidnapped her and rode to King’s Landing to protest but Aegon had him imprisoned. Rickard Stark then rode to King’s Landing demanding justice but was executed with wildfire. Brandon was strangled.

Robert’s Rebellion
Eddard Stark, now head of house Stark, called out his bannerman and joined forces with Robert Baratheon. They vowed to bring down the Targaryens. Robert was defeated at the Battle of Ashford but then saw victory at the Battle of the Bells.

Rhaegar Targaryen had his marriage to Elia of Dorne annulled and secretly married Lyanna Stark.

Robert’s Rebellion
The royalist forces led by Rhaegar Targaryen were defeated at the Battle of the Trident. Rhaegar was killed by Robert Baratheon.

After the death of Prince Rhaegar, Aerys II sent his pregnant wife and Prince Viserys to Dragonstone for safety. He refused to let Elia of Dorne or her children leave. He believed that keeping them hostage would keep House Martell and Dorne on his side. Aerys then had wildfire deposited around Kings Landing vowing to burn the city and its inhabitants rather than let Robert Baratheon take the city.

Tywin Lannister arrived at the city gates to Kings Landing. He pledged his loyalty to the Crown and asked to be let in to help defend the city. Aerys II did not trust him but Grand Maester Pycelle persuaded him to open the city gates. Once inside the Lannister forces began destroying the city on behalf of Robert Baratheon. Elia Dorne and her children were brutally murdered.

Jaime Lannister, as a member of the Kingsguard had remained with the King. When Aerys II ordered Lord Rossart to light the wildfire and burn the city and its inhabitants to the ground, Jaime Lannister killed Rossart before fatally stabbing the King in the back. The move earned him the name Kingslayer but saved the population of Kings Landing.

King Aerys II was the last Targaryen King to rule Westeros, but he was not the last Targaryen.

Lyanna Stark gave birth to a son in the Tower of Joy. As she lay dying from the birth she gave the child to her brother Ned to look after. Ned kept the identity of the child secret and brought him up as his bastard. He was named Jon Snow.

A daughter, Daenerys Targaryen, was born postumously to King Aerys II and Rhaella Targaryen on Dragonstone Rhaella died shortly after the birth.
