Otto Hightower Timeline

Otto Hightower was born, the younger brother of Hobert Hightower. The names of their parents are not known.

Otto Hightower married and had two children, Gwayne and Alicent.

Otto Hightower’s wife died.
Season 1 Prologue Age 39
King Jaehaerys I died. He was succeeded by King Viserys I who chose Otto to be Hand of the King. Otto strongly disliked the king’s brother Daemon Targaryen and sought to undermine him when he could.
Before Season 1 Age 48
Having conspired to remove Prince Daemon from his post of Master of Laws, he now managed to have him removed as Master of Coin. Viserys made his brother Commander of the Kingsguard.

Otto Hightower attended a meeting of the Small Council. Those present were King Viserys, Otto Hightower, Corlys Valeryon husband of Rhaenys Targaryen, Lyman Beesbury, Grand Maester Mellos. Otto dismissed the concerns of Corys Valeryon regarding pirates from overseas and instead complained that Prince Daemon had spent too much money equipping the Kingsguard.

After learning that Prince Daemon had summarily punished the thieves, murderers and rapists of Kings Landing, Otto complained to the King about the excessive violence used. Daemon was duly reprimanded by the King.

Otto was present at the tournament to mark the impending birth of the expected heir. He was angry when Prince Daemon chose his son Gwayne as his first challenger and then asked his daughter Alicent for her favour.

During the tournament, King Viserys was called to the birthing room where he was told that the baby was in the breach position and could not be turned. He was told that the child could be saved if they cut Aemma open but she would die if they did so. Viserys chose to save the child. He sat with his wife as she bled to death. The child died soon after its birth.

The funeral of Queen Aemma and Prince Baelon was held.

The small council once again begged Viserys to name his heir. Otto argued that Prince Daemon would not be suitable to be King. Viserys angrily defended his brother saying he had no ambition to be King.

Otto summoned his daughter to the Tower of the Hand. He suggested that she visit Viserys to offer him comfort.

Otto Hightower told King Viserys that his brother, Prince Daemon, had been seen drinking in the brothels and toasting the ‘heir for a day’. Viserys was furious and banished Daemon from court ordering him to return to his wife.

A few months after the death of Queen Aemma, at a meeting of the Small Council, an angry Corlys Velaryon announced that the Triarchy, financed by the Free Cities, had sunk four Westerosi ships. He pleaded with the King to allow him to take the Royal fleet to defeat Craghas Drahar. Otto argued against the action and King Viserys refused to sanction any action that might provoke war with the Free Cities.

Otto Hightower was unhappy when Princess Rhaenyra chose Ser Criston Cole as Commander of the Kingsguard. Otto wanted a more politically advantageous appointment while Rhaenyra maintained that combat skill was more important.

Otto did not want King Viserys to marry Laena, daughter of Corlys Velaryon and instructed his daughter to continue her visits to the King.

After learning that Prince Daemon had stolen the dragon egg set aside for Prince Baelon, Otto Hightower left for Dragonstone to retrieve the egg. However, as he arrived so did Princess Rhaenyra riding Syrax. She took the egg from Daemon, telling Otto that only she could retrieve the egg without bloodshed, thwarting his effort to destroy Prince Daemon.

At the next meeting of the Small Council, King Viserys announced his intention to marry Alicent Hightower. Corlys Velaryon and Princess Rhaenyra stormed out, while Otto beamed with happiness.

Otto Hightower was present at the hunt to celebrate Prince Aegon’s second birthday.

Otto Hightower was not happy to see Daemon return to the capital and make peace with the King.

Otto was delighted when he learned from his spies that Daemon had been seen in the brothels with Princess Rhaenyra. He immediately told the King.

Otto was shocked when he was confronted by Viserys and accused of manipulating the King and court to further himself. Viserys removed his Hand of the King badge relieving him of the position.

Otto was about to leave the Red Keep when his daughter Alicent arrived to bid him farewell. She told Otto that she believed Rhaenyra had told the truth and that she was still a virgin. Otto told his daughter that she either had to prepare Aegon for kingship or hope that if Rhaenyra does succeed she doesn’t murder Alicent’s children to remove their threat to her position. He told her to choose her position sooner rather than later.

Otto Hightower, proudly wearing the badge of Hand of the King, went to Driftmark for the funeral of Laena Velaryon.

After the fight where Prince Aemond lost an eye, Otto visited Alicent and commended her spirit for revenge. He said that getting the dragon Vhaegar on their side was worth more than the loss of an eye.

The health of King Viserys had deteriorated badly over the previous six years. Alicent has taken his place on the Small Council. She and Otto were running the country and making the decisions.

After hearing that Corlys Velaryon has been badly injured in battle at Stepstones, those with a claim to Driftmark arrived in Kings Landing to petition the King. Otto and Alicent secretly met with Vaemond, Corlys’ brother.

Otto Hightower sat the iron throne in place of the King to hear the petitions for Driftmark. He told the assembly that he represented the King who was unable to attend. Vaemond spoke first stating his claim on the grounds that Lucerys (Luke) was not of Velaryon blood. As Rhaenyra began her petition on behalf of her son, Viserys arrived. This shocked those present, especially Otto and Alicent. The King was very weak and feeble and barely able to walk unaided. However, once on the throne he said that Rhaenys was the only person present who had insight into Corlys’ wishes.

Rhaenys stepped forward to speak and told the assembly that Corlys had always wished for Luke to succeed him. She said she agreed and accepted Rhaenyra’s proposal for Luke and Jace to marry Baela and Rhaena. Vaemond was furious. He questioned Luke’s parentage and called Rhaenyra a whore. Viserys ordered his tongue be removed. Daemon stepped forward and decapitated Vaemond.

Alicent attended a celebratory meal requested by Viserys. Viserys told those present that they were the people he loved the most and asked them to be nice to each other. Rhaenyra toasted Alicent and she reciprocated. Although tension remained the others made toasts in a show of harmony. Viserys called for music, looked at the happy faces around him and had a relapse. He was carried back to bed. A fight then broke out between Luke, Jace, Aemond and Aegon.

Otto was told that the King was dead. Alicent arrived and told him that Viserys had named Aegon as his successor.

A meeting of the small council was called to announce the King’s death and accession of Aegon. The decision to crown Aegon rather than Rhaenyra was challenged by Lord Lyman Beesbury. Criston Cole killed him by smashing his head into his pewter plate. Otto Hightower then told Lord Westerling, Commander of the Kingsguard, to go to Dragonstone and kill Rhaenyra and Daemon. He took off his cloak and refused to do the deed saying that he only served the king and there was no king at present.

Otto and Alicent looked for Aegon in the palace but he was nowhere to be found. Otto sent Arryk and Erryk Cargill to find Aegon and bring him back. They were told not to tell the Queen when they found Aegon.

Larys Strong told Otto that Allun Caswell was a traitor. He was interrogated and then hanged in the courtyard.

Otto Hightower summoned the Heads of all the Houses to the throne room and asked them to swear allegiance to Aegon. Those that refused were executed.

Erryk and Arryk were approached by Jayne, the maid of Lady Mysaria. Mysaria speaks to Otto and tells him that if he stops the children fighting in the pits she will tell him where Aegon is. He assured her that it would be done.

Otto was surprised when Alicent visited him and told him that she had Aegon and that things would be done her way. She said that terms would be offered to Princess Rhaenyra, Criston Cole would be Commander of the Kingsguard and that Aegon would be anointed the following day in front of the people.

Otto Hightower attended the coronation of King Aegon II. After being crowned the people cheered for him. Suddenly Rhaenys, riding her dragon, crashed into the building. However, instead of burning those on the dais, her dragon hissed a warning and she rode off.

Otto Hightower sailed to Dragonstone to offer terms to Rhaenyra.

Otto Hightower told Rhaenyra that if she would swear fealty to Aegon II then she could have Dragonstone. He told Rhaenyra that the Starks, Tullys and Borros Baratheon had sworn allegiance to Aegon II. Rhaenyra called Otto a traitor and angrily threw his Hand of the King badge into the sea. He then gave her a peace offering from Alicent. Daemon wanted to fight but Rhaenyra said that she would give Otto an answer the next day.
