The Vikings began making raids along the South coast of England.
840 (during)
King Wigstan of Mercia decided to enter a religious order rather than continue as King. He nominated his mother as regent but refused permission for her to marry Berhtric. Berhtric’s supporters murdered Wigstan and Berhtric’s father Beorhtwulf seized the Mercian crown.
843 (Easter)
Aethelwulf was defeated by a Viking force at Carhampton.
844 (during)
King Aethelred II of Northumbria was deposed by Raedwulf.
849 (around)
A son, Alfred, was born to Aethelwulf and Osburga at Wantage, Berkshire.
