The Mercian King, Wiglaf regained control from King Egbert of Wessex.
835 (during)
Danish Vikings made an alliance with the leaders of Cornwall against the rule of King Egbert.
835 (during)
Danish Vikings invaded the Isle of Sheppey in the north of Kent.
836 (during)
Battle of Carhampton
The Vikings had attacked North Devon and Somerset. Egbert tried to defeat them but he was forced to retreat.
838 (during)
Battle of Hingston Down
Egbert fought a combined force of Vikings and Cornishmen and was victorious.
839 (February)
Egbert died and was buried at Winchester. He was succeeded by his son, Aethelwulf.
839 (June)
Aethelwulf was crowned at Kingston-upon-Thames.
839 (Summer)
Aethelwulf made his eldest son, Aethelstan, sub-regulus of Kent, Essex and Sussex.
