1456 (11th June)
Anne Neville was born to Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick and Anne Beauchamp at Warwick Castle. Anne’s father had previously been an adviser to King Henry VI but had switched his allegiance to Richard of York after the King had given preferment to the Duke of Somerset. Anne was the couple’s second daughter, her sister Isabel had been born in 1451.
1458 (during)
Anne’s father, Richard Neville fled to Calais after coming into conflict with Henry VI.
1460 (26th June)
Anne’s father and Edward Earl of March, son of Richard of York landed at Sandwich at the head of an army and marched towards London.
1460 (10th July)
Battle of Northampton
Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick and Edward, Earl of March defeated the Lancastrians and captured King Henry VI. Henry’s wife, Margaret of Anjou and Prince Edward fled to Harlech Castle.
1460 (30th December)
Battle of Wakefield
Richard of York, who Anne’s father had hoped to make King, was killed in this battle.
1460 (31st December)
Following the Lancastrian victory at the Battle of Wakefield, King Henry VI was released from captivity but was still mentally unstable and as a consequence was unfit to rule.
1461 (January)
The Earl of Warwick put forward Richard Duke of York’s son, Edward, as claimant to the throne.
1461 (late February)
Richard Neville and Edward of York joined forces and marched towards London.
1461 (4th March)
Edward of York took the throne as King Edward IV with Anne’s father, Warwick, as his chief adviser.
1461 (28th June)
Edward IV was crowned King at Westminster Abbey.
1461 (after June)
Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, was the real power behind the crown and made decisions and shaped policy.
1462 (during)
The Earl of Warwick, was created High Admiral of England and Steward of the Duchy of Lancaster.
1462 (Summer)
Warwick successfully negotiated a truce with Scotland.
1463 (late March)
Warwick negotiated a truce with France which would be sealed with the marriage of Edward IV to the French King’s sister. However, the new King had secretly married Elizabeth Woodville, daughter of Richard Woodville, Baron Rivers.
1464 (September)
Anne’s father was furious when King Edward IV announced his marriage to Elizabeth Woodville.
1465 (during)
Richard, younger brother of King Edward IV, began his education in Warwick’s house.
1466 (during)
The Earl of Warwick was angry with the King after he made the Queen’s father, Baron Rivers, treasurer of England. Rivers pressed for an alliance with the Burgundians bringing him into conflict with Warwick who favoured an alliance with France.
1467 (October)
Warwick, learned that Edward had gone behind his back and signed a treaty with the Burgundians. He was frustrated and annoyed that Edward favoured his wife’s relatives rather than his trusted advisers.
1469 (Spring)
Richard, younger brother of King Edward, was removed from Warwick’s household as relations with the King broke down.
1469 (April)
Warwick, secretly organised a rebellion against Edward in the North. The rebellion, known as Robin of Redesdale’s Rebellion, was quickly put down by the Yorkists.
1469 (26th July)
Battle of Edgecote Moor
Warwick, raised an army of northern rebels led by Sir John Conyers, Edward’s cousin. They defeated a force of Welsh loyalists led by William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke.
1469 (11th July)
Anne’s sister, Isabel, married George Duke of Clarence, brother of King Edward IV in Calais. The marriage took place in secret without Edward’s permission. Warwick had designs on capturing Edward, placing the Duke of Clarence on the throne and ruling through him.
1469 (late July)
The Earl of Warwick, captured Edward IV, and executed Baron Rivers and his eldest son. He tried gain acceptance for George to rule instead but he was not supported by the nobility.
1469 (August)
Warwick, moved Edward IV to Middleham Castle where he remained under house arrest.
1469 (10th September)
Anne’s father, Warwick, was forced to release Edward IV because he was unable to gain sufficient support among the nobles to put the Duke of Clarence on the throne.
1469 (October)
Anne’s father tried to work with the newly released King Edward IV but the relationship broke down again.
1470 (12th March)
Battle of Losecoat Field
The Earl of Warwick and George Duke of Clarence, with Lancastrian support, rebelled against Edward but were defeated. They fled to France.
1470 (1st May)
In France, Warwick, made an alliance with Margaret of Anjou, wife of the deposed King Henry VI.
1470 (25th July)
Anne Neville was betrothed to the son of King Henry VI, Edward, Prince of Wales, at Angers Cathedral.
1470 (13th September)
The Earl of Warwick and George Duke of Clarence landed at Plymouth at the head of an army.
1470 (30th October)
King Henry VI was restored to the English throne with Warwick as chief minister.
1470 (13th December)
Anne Neville married Henry VI’s son and heir, Edward, at the Chateau d’Amboise.
1471 (14th March)
King Edward IV returned to England at the head of a Burgundian, Yorkist army. George Duke of Clarence deserted Warwick and joined his brother’s army.
1471 (14th April)
Battle of Barnet
The Earl of Warwick was killed fleeing the field after the Yorkists won this battle.
1471 (after 14th April)
Anne Neville’s mother sought sanctuary from the Yorkists in Beaulieu Abbey but Anne stayed with her husband and the Lancastrian army.
1471 (4th May)
Battle of Tewekesbury
This battle saw another decisive victory for the Yorkists. Edward, Prince of Wales, was killed in this battle leaving Anne a widow.
1471 (21st May)
King Edward IV returned triumphant to London. It is believed that Henry VI was murdered in the Tower of London on the same day, possibly by Richard Duke of Gloucester.
1471 (late May)
Anne had been taken in by her sister Isabel, who was married to George Duke of Clarence. George knew that his brother Richard, Duke of Gloucester, wanted to marry Anne. However he was determined to prevent the marriage because Richard would then be entitled to a share of Warwick’s estate. Anne was held under virtual house arrest.
1472 (February)
Anne received a proposal of marriage from Edward IV’s brother Richard. It is possible that Richard renounced all claims to the Warwick inheritance in order to allow the marriage.
1472 (12th July)
Anne married Richard Duke of Gloucester in St Stephen’s Chapel, Palace of Westminster. The couple made their home at Middleham Castle in Yorkshire.
1473 (June)
Anne’s mother, Anne de Beauchamp, dowager Countess of Warwick, joined Anne and Richard at Middleham Castle.
1476 (December)
A son, Edward was born to Anne and Richard Duke of Gloucester at Middleham Castle, Yorkshire. He was known as Edward of Middleham.
1476 (22nd December)
Anne’s sister, Isabel, died. Her husband believed she had been murdered but it is more likely she died from complications following the birth of her son, Richard or from tuberculosis.
1477 (during)
Anne and her husband, Richard, joined the Corpus Christi Guild of York.
1478 (18th February)
Anne’s brother-in-law, George Duke of Clarence, was tried for treason and executed.
1482 (July)
Richard Duke of Gloucester invaded Scotland.
1482 (24th August)
Richard re-took Berwick from the Scots.
1483 (9th April)
King Edward IV died at the Palace of Westminster. He was succeeded by his young son, Edward. Richard Duke of Gloucester was nominated Lord High Protector.
1483 (16th April)
Richard, wrote to the young King Edward V pledging loyalty.
1483 (23rd April)
Richard Duke of Gloucester left York to travel to London.
1483 (30th April)
Richard Duke of Gloucester met Edward V and his party as they were travelling south. He arrested Earl Rivers, Richard Grey and Thomas Vaughan and sent them north where they were placed in captivity. He then captured Edward and continued on to the Tower of London.
1483 (4th May)
Richard and Edward V reached London.
1483 (8th May)
Richard Duke of Gloucester was officially appointed Lord Protector.
1483 (19th May)
King Edward V was placed in the Tower of London to await his coronation.
1483 (16th June)
Richard, persuaded Elizabeth Woodville to give up custody of King Edward V’s younger brother Richard. The young prince Richard joined his brother in the Tower of London.
1483 (22nd June)
Ralph Shaw preached a sermon stating that Edward IV had been contracted to marry Eleanor Butler when he married Elizabeth Woodville and that the marriage was therefore invalid and his children all illegitimate.
1483 (25th June)
Parliament declared that as Edward IV’s marriage to Elizabeth Woodville was invalid and the children of Richard of Gloucester’s older brother, George Duke of Clarence had been denied succession rights, then Richard was the rightful King.
1483 (26th June)
Anne’s husband, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, took the throne as King Richard III.
1483 (6th July)
Richard was crowned King Richard III, and Anne Neville was crowned Queen consort in Westminster Abbey.
1483 (mid July)
Anne and Richard, accompanied by their son left London to make a progress of the country.
1483 (August)
The princes, Edward and Richard were last seen at the windows of the Tower. It was rumoured that Richard had murdered them.
1483 (24th August)
Anne and Richard’s son, Edward of Middleham, was created Prince of Wales.
1483 (29th August)
Anne and Richard reached York on their progress. They were well received by the city.
1483 (25th December)
Henry Tudor announced that he was the rightful King of England and that when he took the throne he would marry Edward IV’s eldest daughter, Elizabeth of York.
1484 (January)
Anne, Richard and their son, made a progress of Kent.
1484 (23rd January)
Titulus Regius
This act, passed by Parliament, formally declared Richard to be lawful King and settled the succession on his son Edward. The children of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville were legally declared illegitimate.
1484 (9th April)
Anne and Richard’s son, Edward died. Anne and Richard were devastated by his sudden death.
1485 (16th March)
Anne Neville died, probably of tuberculosis.
