In 2019 Sam Smith declared themself non-binary and expressed a preference to be referred to by the non-gender pronouns ‘they’ and ‘them’. This timeline respects that choice.

 

1992 (19th May)
Sam Smith was born Samuel Frederick Smith to Frederick Smith and Kate Cassidy in London.
1996 (September)
Education for Sam began at the local Primary School. Sam suffered from gynecomastia and was bullied at school.
2003 (September)
Sam attended St Mary’s Catholic School, Bishop’s Stortford.
2004 (during)
Sam was given liposuction for gynecomastia.
2007 (around)
Smith appeared in the Youth Music Theatre UK production of ‘Oh! Carol’.
2008 (18th August)
Sam released their first single ‘Bad Day All Week’. It did not reach the charts.
2009 (2nd April)
The single ‘When It’s Alright’ was released. It did not reach the charts.
2012 (8th October)
Sam Smith featured on the single ‘Latch’ by Disclosure. It reached number 11 in the UK and number 7 in the US charts.

The single ‘Money On My Mind’ was released. It reached number 1 in the UK charts.

2014 (May)
Smith announced that they are gay. They also announced an ended relationship with Jonathan Zeizel.

Sam released their first studio album ‘In The Lonely Hour’. It reached number 1 in the UK and number 2 in the US charts.
2014 (24th August)
Sam Smith performed ‘Stay With Me’ at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony.
2014 (31st August)
The single ‘I’m Not The Only One’ was released. It reached number 3 in the UK and number 5 in the US charts.
2014 (October)
Smith agreed an out of court settlement with Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne after they complained that there were musical similarities between Smith’s ‘Stay With Me’ and their song ‘I Won’t Back Down’.
2014 (7th October)
Sam Smith and other artists featured on the single ‘God Only Knows’ by Brian Wilson. It reached number 20 charts.
2014 (17th November)
Sam Smith was among artists featured on the charity single ‘Band Aid 30’. It reached number 1 in the UK and number 63 in the US charts.
2014 (5th December)
The single ‘Like I Can’ was released. It reached number 9 in the UK and number 99 in the US charts.
2014 (6th December)
The cover single ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ was released. It reached number 65 in the UK and number 90 in the US charts.

Smith began their ‘In The Lonely Hour’ tour taking in Asia, Australasia, Europe and North America.
2015 (30th January)
The single ‘Lay Me Down’ was re-released. It reached number 15 in the UK and number 8 in the US charts.
2015 (8th February)
Sam performed ‘Stay With Me’ at the Grammy Awards Ceremony. During the ceremony they received awards for Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.

Smith won a Brit Award for British Breakthrough Act.
2015 (8th May)
Sam Smith featured on the single ‘Moments’ by Freddy Verano.
2015 (15th May)
Sam released the remix album ‘The Lost Tapes – Remixed’.

It was announced that Sam Smith was in a relationship with actor Brandon Flynn.
