Note: Ragnar Lothbrok is featured in many of the Norse sagas and is also mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles. It is unclear from these sources whether he was a real person or a legendary figure. His sons however, are real Vikings.

According to legend, Ragnar Lothbrok was born to Sigurd Hring of Sweden.

Ragnar married the legendary shield maiden Lagertha after impressing her by killing a bear and a large hound.

A son, Fridleif, was born to Ragnar and Lagertha.

Ragnar divorced Lagertha and married Thora Borgarhjort, daughter of King Herraud of Sweden.

Ragnar and Thora had two sons Eirikr and Agnar.

Ragnar fought a civil war to keep control of Denmark. Lagertha came to his aid with a large fleet of ships and warriors.

A son, Ivar was born to Ragnar Lothbrok and Aslaug Sigurdsdottir. He was nicknamed ‘the Boneless’. This may have been because he was disabled, because he was impotent or because he had very large bones and was tall and heavy.

A son, Bjorn was born to Ragnar and possibly Aslaug Sigurdsdottir. He was known as Bjorn Ironside.

A son, Sigurd was born to Ragnar Lothbrok, and Aslaug Sigurdsdottir. He was called Sigurd Snake-in-the-eye because of an unusual snake-like marking in one eye.

Ragnar Lothbrok is said to have taken over the rule of Sweden and Denmark on the death of his father.

Ragnar is said to have gone on a journey through Russia. He was accompanied by his son Sigurd.

A son, Halfdan was born to Ragnar Lothbrok and Aslaug Sigurdsdottir. The records are unclear as to whether Halfdan was also known as Hvitserk or whether Hvitserk was another son of Ragnar.

Ragnar was given land in Frisia (a province of north-west Netherlands)by Charles the Bald.
845 (Spring)
Siege of Paris
This Viking attack by 120 Viking ships on Paris was led by Reginherus who may have been Ragnar Lothbrok. The Vikings withdrew after being paid 2500 kg of silver and gold.
865 (around)
Despite being warned against sailing to England Ragnar Lothbrok made the voyage. He was shipwrecked off the Northumbrian coast. On hearing the news, King Aelle of Northumbria immediately marched, defeated the Viking army and took Ragnar prisoner.
865 (during)
King Aelle of Northumbria killed Ragnar by throwing him into a pit of snakes.
