Note: Aslaug is a Norse mythological queen who is said to have been the third wife of Ragnar Lothbrok who may or may not have been a real person. The sons of Ragnar and Aslaug were real Vikings.

Aslaug was born to Sigurd, who famously slew a dragon, and the shieldmaiden, Brynhildr. Her parents were not married.

Aslaug’s mother killed herself after Sigurd died during a quarrel with his wife Gudrun. Brynhildr is said to have caused the quarrel.

After the death of her parents, Aslaug was raised by Heimer who worked as a travelling harp player and hid Aslaug in the harp.

Heimer was killed by Ake and Grima who wanted to steal the harp as they believed it contained valuables. When they broke the harp open they discovered Aslaug. They named her Kraka.

Aslaug was seen bathing by some of Ragnar Lothbrok’s men who were so taken with her beauty that they burned bread they were baking. When they told Ragnar of the girl, Ragnar sent for her.

A son, Ivar was born to Aslaug Sigurdsdottir and Ragnar Lothbrok. He was nicknamed ‘the Boneless’. This may have been because he was disabled, because he was impotent or because he had very large bones and was tall and heavy.

A son, Bjorn was born to Aslaug and Ragnar Lothbrok. He was known as Bjorn Ironside.

A son, Sigurd was born to Aslaug and Ragnar Lothbrok. He was called Sigurd Snake-in-the-eye because of an unusual snake-like marking in one eye.

Ragnar Lothbrok is said to have taken over the rule of Sweden and Denmark on the death of his father.

A son, Ubba was born to Aslaug and Ragnar and Lothbrok.
830 (around)
A son, Halfdan was born to Aslaug and Ragnar Lothbrok. The records are unclear as to whether Halfdan was also known as Hvitserk or whether Hvitserk was another son of Ragnar.

Aslaug warned Ragnar not to go to England.
865 (during)
Ragnar was captured and killed by King Aelle of Northumbria who threw him into a pit of snakes.

Aslaug’s fate is unknown.
