1001 (around)
King Duncan was born Donnchad mac Crinain, the son of Crinan of Dunkeld and his wife Bethoc, daughter of King Malcolm II. Crinan was a lay abbot.
1025 (around)
Some sources indicate that Duncan became ruler of Strathclyde. However, other sources refute this.
1030 (during)
Duncan married Suthen a relative of Earl Siward of Northumbria. Some sources give her name as Sybilla or Aelflaed.
1031 (26th March)
A son, Mael Coluim mac Donnchada (Malcolm), was born to Duncan and Suthen.
1032 (during)
A son, Domnall mac Donnchada (Donald), was born to Duncan and Suthen.
1034 (25th November)
Duncan became King of the Scots following the death of his grandfather, King Malcolm II.
1039 (during)
King Duncan sent troops north to take control of the Orkneys but they were defeated.
1039 (during)
The Earl of Bernica invaded Cumbria. On hearing the news, Duncan marched south and lay siege to Durham, but he was defeated and returned to Scotland.

After returning to Scotland, Duncan marched north to meet the force retreating from the Orkneys. Together they attacked the Orkneys again but were again defeated and fled south.
1040 (during)
The struggles between Duncan and his cousin, leader of the northern clans, Macbeth continued. In a bid to increase his strength, Macbeth formed an alliance with Earl Thorfinn of the Orkneys.
1040 (15th August)
Battle of Bothganowan
Duncan led a force north to Moray. They met the forces of Macbeth and his ally Earl Thorfinn of Orkney at Bothganowan near Elgin. King Duncan was killed during the fighting.
1040 (15th August)
Duncan’s sons were considered too young to rule so Macbeth succeeded Duncan as King of Scotland.
