1947 (8th January)
David Bowie was born David Robert Jones to Haywood Jones and his wife, Margaret nee Burns in Brixton, South London. His father worked as a promotions officer for the children’s charity, Barnardo’s and his mother worked as an usherette at a cinema in Royal Tunbridge Wells.
1951 (September)
David began his education at Stockwell Infants School.
1953 (during)
The family moved to Bromley in Kent.
1955 (September)
David attended Burnt Ash Junior School.
1956 (during)
David’s father brought home some records by American artists. David was particularly impressed by Elvis Presley, Little Richard and Chuck Berry.
1958 (September)
David attended Bromley Technical High School.
1961 (during)
David began learning how to play the saxophone.
1962 (during)
David was punched in the eye during a fight with a classmate over a girl. Despite being hospitalised for four months, the injury to his eye could not be repaired and his left eye was permanently dilated.

David Jones formed his first band, The Konrads. The group played a few local gigs.

David left the Konrads and joined the King Bees.

Leslie Conn became David’s manager.

David and manager Leslie Conn parted company.

David changed his name to David Bowie to avoid confusion with the Monkees’ singer, Davy Jones.

David Bowie released the single ‘Space Oddity’. It reached number 5 in the UK and number 15 in the US Charts.

Bowie sacked his manager, Kenneth Pitt and replaced him with Tony Defries. Pitt sued Bowie and won a case for compensation.

David Bowie released the album ‘David Bowie’. It caused some confusion since it had the same name as his previous album. It reached number 17 in the UK charts in 1972.

Bowie was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. The news was kept private.

2015 (7th December)
Bowie’s musical ‘Lazarus’ opened on Broadway, New York. David attended the opening night performance. It was the last time he was seen in public.

2016 (8th January)
Bowie released the album ‘Blackstar’. It reached number 1 in the UK and number 1 in the US charts.
2016 (10th January)
David Bowie died in Manhattan, New York of cancer of the liver.
2016 (12th January)
In accordance with the terms of his will, no funeral service was held. Bowie was cremated and his ashes scattered in Bali.
2016 (11th November)
The compilation album ‘Bowie Legacy’ was released posthumously. It reached number 5 in the UK and number 78 in the US charts.

2017 (16th June)
