1902 (8th January)
Carl Rogers was born to Walter Rogers and his wife, Julia Cushing in Oak Park, Chicago. He was the fourth of six children.
1914 (during)
The family moved to a farm about 30 miles west of Chicago
1919 (September)
Carl attended the University of Wisconsin where he studied agriculture.
1921 (September)
Carl decided to change course and began studying History at the University of Wisconsin.
1922 (during)
Carl was selected to spend 6 months in Peking (Beijing), China for the World Student Christian Federation Conference. The experience made him question his religious views.
1922 (22nd October)
Carl Rogers proposed to Helen Elliott and she agreed to become his wife.
1924 (Summer)
Carl graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a BA in History.

Rogers attended the Union Theological Seminary, New York, with a view to becoming a church minister.
1924 (28th August)
Carl Rogers married Helen Elliott.
1926 (date unknown)
Having decided against a career in Religion, Carl decided to study Psychology at the Teachers College, University of Columbia, New York.
1926 (17th March)
A son, David Elliott Rogers was born to Carl and Helen.
1927 (June)
Carl gained an MA in Psychology from the Teachers’ College, Columbia University, New York.
1928 (during)
Carl Rogers joined the Rochester Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (RSPCC), in New York as a Child Psychologist.
1928 (9th October)
A daughter, Natalie Rogers was born to Carl and Helen.
1929 (during)
Rogers was appointed Director of the Child Study Department, RSPCC.
1931 (20th March)
Carl gained a PhD in Psychotherapy from Columbia University, New York.

Carl Rogers published ‘Measuring Personality Adjustment in Children: Nine to Thirteen Years of Age’.

Rogers took up a post lecturing at the University of Rochester in New York.

Rogers published ‘The Clinical Treatment of the Problem Child’.

Rogers took up a position as Professor of Clinical Psychotherapy at Ohio State University.

Carl made a speech to the University of Minnesota’s Psychological Honors Society. During the speech he outlined his idea of a client-centered therapy.

Rogers published ‘Counseling and Psychotherapy: Newer Concepts in Practice’.
1944 (during)
Carl Rogers was appointed President of the American Association for Applied Psychology.
1945 (during)
Rogers established the Counseling Center of the University of Chicago. He worked in the Center as professor of Psychology and the Executive Secretary.

Carl Rogers was appointed president of the American Psychological Association.

Rogers published ‘Client-centered Therapy: Its Current Practice, Implications and Theory’.

Roger’s theories were centred around the Nineteen Propositions, client centred counselling and the use of Unconditional Positive Regard (UPR).

Carl worked in the departments of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin.

Rogers published ‘On Becoming a Person: A Therapist’s View of Psychotherapy’.

Carl moved to La Jolla, California where he joined the staff of the Western Behavioural Studies Institute.

Carl Rogers published ‘The Therapeutic Relationship and Its Impact: A Study of Psychotherapy with Schizophrenics’.

Carl was one of the founders of the Center for Studies of the Person (CSP).

Rogers was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
