Bob Dylan was born Robert Allen Zimmerman to Abram Zimmerman and Beatrice nee Stone (known as Beatty) in St Mary’s Hospital, Duluth, Minnesota, USA. The family were Jewish and lived in Duluth, Bob’s father was an appliance salesman. His maternal grandparents had emigrated to America in 1902 from Lithuania and his paternal grandparents had fled the anti-Semetic pogroms in Russia in 1905.

The family moved to the Mesabi Range in Hibbing, Minesota after Robert’s father contracted polio.
