1941 (24th May)
Bob Dylan was born Robert Allen Zimmerman to Abram Zimmerman and Beatrice nee Stone (known as Beatty) in St Mary’s Hospital, Duluth, Minnesota, USA. The family were Jewish and lived in Duluth, Bob’s father was an appliance salesman. His maternal grandparents had emigrated to America in 1902 from Lithuania and his paternal grandparents had fled the anti-Semetic pogroms in Russia in 1905.
1946 (February)
Zimmerman’s brother David was born to Abram Zimmerman and Beatrice nee Stone.
1947 (during)
The family moved to the Mesabi Range in Hibbing, Minesota after Robert’s father contracted polio.
1952 (during)
Robert took piano lessons from his cousin Harriet Rutstein.
1952 (Autumn)
Robert Zimmerman attended Hibbing High School.
1954 (May)
Robert had his Bar Mitzvah, a Jewish coming of age ritual.
1955 (around)
Zimmerman taught himself to play the guitar.

Zimmerman and his friends Le Roy Hoiikkala and Monte Edwardson formed the group Golden Chords.

Zimmerman began to drift away from the Golden Chords as he became fascinated by R&B music.

Zimmerman began a relationship with Echo Helstrom, daughter of mechanic Matt Helstrom and his wife Martha. Neither family approved of their children’s relationship.

Zimmerman attended the University of Minnesota to study the arts. However, he regularly skipped classes preferring to spend his time in the coffeshops of Mineapolis.

Zimmerman began using the name Bob Dylan.

Having attended hardly any classes, Dylan dropped out of University.
1961 (January)
Bob moved to New York City. He began playing folk songs at gigs in Greenwich Village. He also spent time visiting his idol, Woody Guthrie, who was ill with Huntington’s disease.

Dylan began a 2 week contract playing as support for John Lee Hooker at Gerde’s Folk City.
1961 (September)
John Hammond, President of Columbia Records, heard Dylan performing and signed him on a five-year recording contract.

Dylan began a relationship with Suze Rotolo.

Dylan’s first album ‘Bob Dylan’ was released. It reached number 13 in the UK charts.

Robert Zimmerman formally changed his name to Bob Dylan.

Dylan met folk singer-songwriter, Joan Baez. They began a relationship soon afterwards.

The album ‘The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan’ was released. It reached number 1 in the UK and number 22 in the US charts.

Dylan walked out of ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ after being told he could not sing his song ‘Talkin’ John Birch Paranoid Blues’.

Bob Dylan performed at the Newport Folk Festival singing solo and in duet with Joan Baez.

Joan Baez asked Dylan to accompany her on tour. He joined her on stage for duets and also performed solo spots.

The album ‘Another Side of Bob Dylan’ was released. This album was a move away from the protest songs of his previous album. It reached number 8 in the UK and number 43 in the US charts.

The single ‘The Times They Are A-Changin” was released. It reached number 9 in the UK charts.

The single ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’ was released. It reached number 9 in the UK and number 39 in the US charts.

The album ‘Bringing It All Back Home’ was released. This album was the first to use electric guitar. It reached number 1 in the UK and number 6 in the US charts.

Bob Dylan appeared at the Newport Folk Festival playing an electric guitar. However, he was greeted by boos. Some sources say fans were annoyed by his move to electric guitar, while others point to problems with the acoustics that led to Dylan’s set being cut short.

Dylan’s relationship with Joan Baez ended.

Dylan began a six month tour of America and Canada.

The album ‘Highway 61 Revisited’ was released. It reached number 4 in the UK and number 3 in the US charts.

The quarterly folk magazine ‘Sing Out!’ denounced Dylan’s use of electric instruments and his move away from a strict folk style.

Dylan was injured following a motorbike accident. He sustained injuries to his neck vertebrae and was also concussed. After the accident he withdrew from the public eye.
