1637 (12th March)
Anne Hyde was born to Edward Hyde and Frances Aylesbury at Cranbourne Lodge Windsor. She was named after her father’s first wife.
1638 (2nd June)
Anne’s brother, Henry, was born to Edward Hyde and Frances Aylesbury
1640 (April)
Anne’s father was elected Member of Parliament for Shaftesbury and Wootton Bassett and sat in the Short Parliament.
1642 (November)
Anne’s father was elected Member of Parliament for Saltash and sat in the Long Parliament. Although he was critical of some of the actions of King Charles I he believed in the monarchy.
1642 (March)
Anne’s brother, Laurence, was born to Edward Hyde and Frances Aylesbury
1642 (22nd August)
King Charles I raised his standard at Nottingham effectively declaring war against Parliament and beginning the English Civil War. Anne’s father was a Royalist and opposed to those in Parliament that wanted war against the King.
1642 (20th May)
Anne’s father went to York where he joined King Charles I.
1643 (February)
Anne’s father was knighted and made a member of the Privy Council.
1643 (March)
Anne’s father became Chancellor of the Exchequer.
1646 (during)
With the Civil War won by Parliament, Anne’s father fled England with prince Charles.
1649 (30th January)
King Charles I was executed by beheading, in front of the Banqueting House at Whitehall Palace, London. He was buried in St George’s Chapel, Windsor. Anne and her family were shocked by the execution.
1649 (5th February)
The Scottish parliament proclaimed prince Charles, King Charles II of Scotland.
1649 (March)
Parliament declared England to be a republic.
1649 (Spring)
Anne and her family were shocked by the execution of the King and fled to the Netherlands and the court of Mary, daughter of Charles I, who was married to William II of Orange. Mary made Anne a maid of honour.
1656 (during)
Anne met James, Duke of York when Mary of Orange was visiting Paris.
1659 (24th November)
James Duke of York promised Anne that they would get married.
1659 (6th May)
In England, Richard Cromwell was removed from power by the army who reinstalled the Rump Parliament (the parliament that had tried King Charles I for treason).
1660 (25th April)
The newly elected parliament contained many members who supported a return to monarchy and Monck persuaded them to restore Charles II to the throne.
1660 (8th May)
Charles, was proclaimed King Charles II by parliament.
1660 (Summer)
James Duke of York was created Lord High Admiral and Warden of the Cinque Ports.
1660 (3rd September)
Anne, who was heavily pregnant, married James Duke of York in a private ceremony in London.
1660 (22nd October)
A son, Charles, was born to James and Anne Hyde at Worcester House, London. He was styled Duke of Cambridge.
1660 (3rd November)
Anne’s father, Edward Hyde, was created Baron Hyde.
1660 (31st December)
James was created Duke of Albany in Scotland.
1661 (23rd April)
Charles was crowned King of England at Westminster Abbey.
1661 (23rd April)
Anne’s father, Edward Hyde, was created Earl of Clarendon.
1661 (5th May)
Anne’s son, Charles, died at Whitehall Palace.
1662 (30th April)
A daughter, Mary, was born to Anne and James Duke of York at St James’s Palace, London.
1662 (21st May)
King Charles II married Catherine of Braganza who was a Catholic in a public Anglican ceremony.
1663 (11th July)
A son, James, was born to Anne and James Duke of York at Worcester House, London.
1665 (6th February)
A daughter, Anne was born to Anne and James Duke of York at St James’s Palace, London.
1665 (June)
New Amsterdam was renamed New York after James, Duke of York.
1665 (July)
The Great Plague of London
A serious outbreak of Bubonic Plague reached London. Most rich people immediately left the city.
1666 (late February)
The Great Plague of London
It was considered safe to return to London and Charles, Catherine and the court returned to the city.
1666 (4th July)
A son, Charles, was born to Anne and James Duke of York at St James’s Palace.
1666 (2nd September)
Great Fire of London
A fire broke out at a bakers in Pudding Lane. It destroyed more than 13,000 houses and 87 churches including St Paul’s Cathedral. James was put in charge of the firefighting operation.
1666 (3rd December)
Anne’s son, James, was made a Knight of the Garter.
1667 (22nd May)
Anne’s son, Charles died at St James’s Palace.
1667 (20th June)
Anne’s son, James died at Richmond Palace.
1667 (Summer)
Anne’s father was charged with treason and fled to France.
1667 (14th September)
A son, Edgar, was born to Anne and James Duke of York at St James’s Palace, London. The birth left Anne weak and ill for more than a year.
1668 (around)
James converted to Catholicism. His conversion was kept secret and James continued to attend the Anglican church. At Charles’s order his two daughters, Mary and Anne were raised as Protestants.
1669 (13th January)
A daughter, Henrietta, was born to Anne and James Duke of York at St James’s Palace, London.
1669 (15th November)
Anne’s daughter, Henrietta, died at St James’s Palace.
1660 (Summer)
Anne converted to Catholicism.
1671 (9th February)
A daughter, Katherine, was born to Anne and James Duke of York at St James’s Palace, London.
1671 (31st March)
Anne Hyde, died at St James’s Palace, London from breast cancer.
